She sleeps on the headboard of our iron bed at night, and usually wakes us up in the morning by climbing down and roaming around the bed - usually gets to me first and nibbles my nose or something. Well, one morning she decided to explore a little past my nose - like on hubby's side of the bed. It was warm and he had kicked off the covers, and being in his usual "morning condition", everything was alert and at attention! I guess she decided that it was just a bigger (barely) version of a nose, 'cause she proceeded to nibble a little, and then CHOMP!! I've never seen him hit the floor so fast in the morning in my life!! Didn't hurt him - but I noticed he never goes to bed without gym shorts on now............ I forgot to ask him if he enjoyed the nibbles.......maybe that's why he takes her to bed and leaves me sitting here on the puter all night!! - -Sandra ------------------------------ From: "Sandra C. She had a terrible struggle with the bird each time she put the harness on it. She decided that she was more determined than the bird was and the bird could just wear the thing (in misery, I might add) all night if it didn't chew it off. I worried over the bird all night that it would hang itself on something and emailed the lady to see who won and if the bird was still alive. It turned out that she really is a nice person who cares a lot about the bird, but that first day of reading the list I was surprised to read what some very well meaning owners put their birds through. If the bird isn't used to such a contraption from the time it is a baby, it must seem to some birds like sheer torture. The bird is feather plucking like crazy now. I wonder if it became totally "freaked out" during that "night of harness" and needs something like psychotherapy. I don't want to know what a straight-jacket feels like, but a bird in a harness might get the same feeling if it hasn't worn one before, and even if so, some birds just try to be good. I doubt that bird will ever understand its owner's motives. - -- Nancy nstrong@deltanet.com ------------------------------ From: Casey Millard Date: Fri, 14 Jun 1996 16:20:56 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [none] My macaw Zeke is 4 months old. Thanks.Beth Shery It's my understanding that all fruit pits (as opposed to seeds) are potentially toxic. Isn't this a cumulative type effect, Gillian?? Also the branches from all "stone" fruits have the same toxin?? - -Sandra Hi Beth and Sandra: All parts of trees belonging to the Prunus family with the EXCEPTION of the fruit, contain cyanogenic glycosides, which release cyanide upon ingestion. The Prunus sp. includes peach, nectarine, apricot, cherry and plum. The inside kernel of the fruit is toxic so should not be fed to birds. Apple (Malus sp.) only contains the cyanogenic gycosides in the seeds. Allowing a bird a couple of apple seeds as a treat will not result in toxicity. Branches of trees belonging to the Prunus species should not be used for bird perches. Branches of apple, however, make good, safe perches. Cyanide is not a cumulative poison. It is quickly metabolized by enzymes in the body. It is only when these enzymes get overwhelmed with too much toxin to break down , that toxicity results. Our bodies actually produce small amounts of cyanide. Cigarette smokers have higher than normal levels. In summary, don't give your birds pits of any fruit of the Prunus species to eat. My wife even buys a bag of legs from Sam's Club just for the birds. They love to split the bone and dig out the marrow. Another good food is to scramble eggs in a microwave there by cooking with out fats or oils. Optional to powder the egg shell in with the egg. Just be sure to clean the shell before using. The surface of the egg is most likely place to carry adverse bacteria. And be sure the egg has cooled before serving. Brad ------------------------------ From: "John O.
