Nina Wegner ------------------------------ From: BYRDBYTE@aol.com Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 08:44:55 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Stolen Too Your story reminds me of another elaborate attempt to steal birds. Ayone who has ever visited Newport Pier has more than likely seen the Bird Man. He is a retired fellow who lives with his birds in a small apartment near the beach. Every day he sets up his little tourist show at the entrance to the pier. I don't know how many birds he has nowadays but I have seen him down there with at least 3 large macaws and several conures. He takes tourist pictures with his Polaroid and entertains passers-by with bird tricks. Most of his birds are flight trained. What really fascinates me is how he manages to get all the birds down there on a bicycle! I used to go to Newport Beach often when I lived in Orange County and would take Harley, my harlequin macaw rollerblading along the strand. We would always stop and talk to the bird man who was very knowledgable about birds though his personality is a bit gruff at times. One day an attractive young woman in a short skirt came by the pier and struck a conversation with Bird Man. She hung around all afternoon and asked questions about birds. When it was time to take his little menagerie home the woman came along and brought a few bottles of wine. She and Bird Man had dinner together and drank wine until he passed out. When Bird Man woke up his guest was gone along with two of his large macaws. This story has a happy ending as the thief tried to sell the birds to a local pet store. The store owner was suspicious and called authorities. When the woman was arrested it was discovered that she was a "he". Bird Man got his birds back and all lived happily ever after. ===Christie ------------------------------ From: NINA & AL Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 09:02:25 -0700 Subject: Re: Young B&G! In the summer when many babies are growing up in the warmer climates, fully feathered isn't as vital as overall activity and size when it comes to moving them to a cage. it is always best to stay with smaller cages, but the those macaw tails are long quite quickly. I wish new owners could know the diference between an active bird fooling around, crinkling their tail and a sick bird. Anyone that has raised babies knows when they run around and get their tail in poop and you wash is 6 times a day or more, that tail may be a little worse for wear. I will answer that question, I am 21. I am married, working full time as a Network Cooridnator, attending college full time, and *do* have experience with children, seeing as though my mother was a single mom, and spent my days at home helping to raise my brother rather than going out with friends.. That included making supper, changing diapers, taking him to swimming lessons, discipling when needed, etc.. You guys get the drift :-) My brother is ADD, and I know the amount of work a *human* child needs, believe me :-) (did I mention I worked at a daycare for 2 years, and regularly babysit for friends?) Of course, that is nothing compared to your own children, but after all I've seen in my brother and other's children, I still want my own.. and I feel if I raise them, the way I was raised, I will have a great relationship with them.. call it optimism if you will :-) Call me still a child if you want, but this little girl has seen a lot in her 21 years, and I do have some knowledge to speak of Amanda :-) >>LOL.. >> SHEESHH!!
