Okay, maybe I will stick to the cornstarch! >Michelle Since I haven't actually asked the birds so I'll just have to reason. The reason a nail bleeds is there is an active vein there. With the vein, there is also nerve tissue (tells the bird what's going on so it can protect the nail, like any other part of its body). A cautery tool burns the nail off, very quickly, mind you, but it still will heat surrounding tissue. Does it hurt? Just judging by the reactions of birds its been done to, yes. Does it hurt more than clippers and/or quickstop? I don't know. I do know its a fairly expensive tool for the average pet owner and needs to be used VERY carefully. Humane society rescue, or whatever. > It is very sad to hear about these sweet little guys being neglected and > abused. > This is so sad! I saw a B&G today in our local shop who I saw last week and fell absolutely positively head over heels in love with....Her name is Jenna, she's 1 yr old and she was owned by an older couple who had a car accident and are now unable to care for her. I don't think she's been out of her cage much--she's a little hesitant to come out but once she does she is so very very friendly and lovable!! She stepped right up on my arm as pretty as you please and I gave her a peanut which she took without taking my fingers with it! LOL She did get nippy at one point and I told her no and she screamed loudly "NO!" (Maybe she's heard this word before???) Scared me too death!! LOL She seems perfectly healthy and in the 25 minutes I was holding and handling her she only tried to bite me once and when I said "Jenna" she said "Don't do that!" I think that she delighted in upsetting her previous owners and seeing just how far she could go....She has a roomy cage and lots of toys and pellets and fresh veggies....they're letting her go for $1500 cage and all and if I could afford it she'd be sitting here with me right now! Anyways, I know it's long but I just wanted to say thanks for all of your tips and info...last week I was petrified of holding this bird, but today I felt so comfortable it was like I'd been doing this for years! I know I still have a lot to learn, but this list, regardless of all the flames that have been going on lately, has been so extremely helpful and I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!! I stated I use super glue for blood feathers and nails...nothing else. THIS WORKS for me !! AND FEATHERS DO CONTINUE TO GROW FROM THE FOLICLE.
