She layed them in a clear plastic box that I put in the cage when I found the first egg. So I guess she only layed one in the box. Anyways, back to my question. I can't get her to sit on them. Both my male and female will acknowledge the eggs, but they won't take care of them. All they will do is roll them around occasionally. How do I get the birds to sit on their eggs? What are the chances of first eggs being fertil? If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. I knew this would happen sometime, but I wasn't ready for it to happen now(not that it matters if I'm ready or not). Burke, Clover Systems Corporation" Date: Tue, 10 Dec 1996 06:58:50 -0800 Subject: Mac's Back - Breckenridge Zoo Mac: Good to hear from you again. Glad you enjoyed my home territory. I grew up with both the San Antonio Zoo & the hill country. Might interest folks to know that in a bunch of the little Texas Hill Country towns like Blanco, Boerne, Kerrville, Lampasas, New Braunsfels etc....have these little town lakes, parks and lovely picnic areas and rock works loaded with aquatic fowl. Most of these old German, Acadian, and other Eastern European settled towns have maintained or restored or built these beautiful little town lake scenes on the banks of the lovely fresh water streams that run through them. Rivers such as the Llano, Blanco, Guadalupe, Frio, Comal, Lampasas, Brazos and countless others flowing (for the most part out of limestone springs) wind their way through our beautiful Hill Country to the delight and solace of those who live near them or are fortunate enough to travel by. I still have pictures of early San Antonio which portrayed similar scenes from San Pedro Springs and the San Antonio River - prior to the demise of the former and the reconstruction of the latter. As a pre-teen in San Antonio, I was an almost weekly visitor to the Breckenridge Park area. The Sunken Gardens, the horse stables & riding trails, the Zoo, the Alligator Gardens, and the Witte Museum. The missions, Fort Sam Houston along with outside trips to Landa and Waneke Parks and Prince Solms Castle in New Braunsfels were always on the agenda for family outings when visitors came to town (frequently). Vacations at friends ranches on the banks of Tom's Creek (now Canyon Lake) and Rio Hondo and the Blanco gave me an appreciation of working ranches, wildlife, and the beauty of nature in a pristine environment. Hope to retire in that country some day - if I can afford it! The Breckenridge Zoo was among the first and best in the Country to advocate and practice the maintenance of exotic wildlife in near-to-natural surroundings. It has always ranked as one of the best Zoos in the world. For years I'd get on a bus with my oldest brother when he went to Breckenridge Park for high school football practice. While he and the team practiced, my mentor and pal Bro. Charlie Labus (a Marianist brother who drove the football team back and forth from Central Catholic High School) and I would bug off to the Zoo, stables, museum or alligator garden. After awhile, Bother Charlie convinced all these facilities to let us in free so, he & I got a tremendous education in zoology, biology, archeology, art, animal husbandry and other sciences. Charlie's winning personality and persistence even allowed us periodic entrance to the Zoo's nurseries to watch baby birds hatch and even the birth of some of the earliest monkeys and chimpanzes born in captivity (early 50's) - sure corrected my earlier ideas of where babies came from. The area got a huge boost during the depression with the efforts of the WSPA (is this the correct acronym/spelling?). Anyway this was a government sponsored program to fund public works to put people to work. In the San Antonio area, this resulted in much of the beautiful rock work we still see at Breckenridge Park, the San Antonio River Walk, and numerous other public facilities in the area. Mexican and German stonemasons took tremendous pride in developing these facilities while earning a much needed living for their families during this period. Don't know why this couldn't serve as a model program in place of welfare doles today? Anyway Mac, thanks for bringing these memories back to mind - if I remember correctly, you spent part of your early years in that area too! Similar to where you live now - but uniquely different. It truly is the heartland of most Texans. My own pair would sit progessively longer with each clutch but then abandon the eggs before hatching. They finally figured it out and now sit it out. This summer they raised 5 healthy babies. If the birds have copulated the eggs are likely fertile. Lynn On Tue, 10 Dec 1996 S_SFAHEY@PSTCC.CC.TN.US wrote: > Hi everyone, > My Lutino cockatiel has layed two eggs in the last three days. That way they will hatch out about the same time.Cockatiels usually lay every other day. Also, is this a pair of tame birds? Are they in the center of your every day activities watching everything going on? If so, the most likely won't take care of the eggs cause they'll be to busy watching everything afraid they will miss something. Get them to a quieter room (plenty of light) and leave them alone as much as possible. It seems sometimes new parents don't really know what to do with the first batch.I've had parents that with their first clutch, didn't even seem to know what the babies were unless they actually seen them hatch.
