Distribution:
Widely distributed in South America: Brazil, except the most S and E;
N-Paraguay; E-Bolivia; E-Peru; E-Columbia and in the North to Panama;
S-Venezuela; Trinidad; Guyana; Surinam and French Guyana
The distribution covers the same areas as the
Blue and Gold Macaw
Description:
Length: 90 cm
Plumage general red. White, naked face striped with small red feathers.
Wings blue, median wing coverts green. Upper tail coverts blue. Tailfaethers
red, turning blue to the end.
Bill: Upper mandible horn colored, lower mandible black
Legs grey
Iris ivory colored
Habitat:
Tropical lowlands at the borders of the jungle.
Nutrition:
Fruits and nuts; esp. Uxi (Endopleura uchi), Jatoba (Hymenaea spec.) and
Bertholletia excelsa.
Breeding:
The begin of the season varies within the range from late November
in the South to Februar/March in the North. Clutch consists of up to
three eggs. Incubation lasts ca. 28 days. The young may leave the nest
after 90 to 100 days of age.
